The Dangers of Mixing Aloe with DMSO

Applying DMSO topically mixed with additives such as aloe carries meaningful risks precisely because of DMSO’s well-documented ability to enhance skin penetration. DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) is a powerful solvent that readily crosses the skin barrier and can carry dissolved substances into deeper tissues and the bloodstream. When commercial aloe products—or any other additives—are combined with it, those accompanying ingredients may also be transported systemically in higher amounts than they would be on their own. This is the central danger.
Contaminants and Unintended Ingredients
Most over-the-counter aloe gels and lotions are not pure aloe vera. They commonly contain preservatives (such as parabens or phenoxyethanol), thickeners, fragrances, alcohols, colorants, or plant extracts. DMSO can increase the absorption of these compounds. Impurities that might remain harmless on the skin surface can reach higher internal concentrations when DMSO is present. Even “natural” aloe preparations can vary widely in quality. Contaminants from processing, residual pesticides, or microbial byproducts may be present at low levels. DMSO does not discriminate: it can facilitate their entry. Once inside the body, these substances may trigger allergic reactions, contact dermatitis that spreads beyond the application site, or, in rarer cases, systemic effects.
Skin and Systemic Reactions
Topical DMSO alone frequently causes local irritation—burning, itching, redness, or dryness. Adding aloe does not reliably neutralize this effect and can sometimes worsen it if the aloe formula contains sensitizing agents. Users also commonly report a distinctive garlic- or oyster-like taste and breath odor as DMSO is metabolized; this is generally benign but unpleasant. More concerning are reports of headache, nausea, or dizziness when impure mixtures are used, likely reflecting absorption of unintended co-solutes. Because DMSO enhances permeability, any substance applied afterward (or residual on the skin) can also be carried inward. This includes residual soaps, lotions, environmental chemicals, or even topical medications that were never intended for systemic use. People with broken skin, eczema, or open wounds face elevated risk, as the barrier is already compromised.
Lack of Standardization and Evidence Gaps
Commercial DMSO–aloe combinations sold in some alternative-health markets are rarely subjected to rigorous purity testing or clinical safety studies for the combination. Aloe itself has a long history of topical use and is generally well tolerated, yet its interaction profile changes when paired with a potent carrier solvent. Individual responses vary with concentration of DMSO (often 70–99 % in consumer products), amount applied, frequency of use, and personal factors such as skin integrity and metabolic sensitivity. High concentrations of DMSO can also denature proteins and disrupt cell membranes temporarily, amplifying local tissue stress when other chemicals are present. Eye contact with DMSO mixtures is particularly hazardous because of rapid absorption and potential corneal damage.
Look for DMSO that Does Not Contain Additives
In short, the same property that makes DMSO an effective penetrant turns additives such as those found in typical aloe products into potential liabilities. Caution, purity, and professional guidance remain the safest approach.
